don’t realize that our team works all year long in planning for the

start looking ahead to the next event date, while at the same time
discussing what we can improve upon next year for the event that just
happened.

On race day at the Eversource Hartford Marathon,

inspired by the runners finishing their full marathon race during the

And hundreds of HARDY runners and incredibly supportive volunteers had an amazing and memorable day!

-------
It’s hard not to also share some additional thoughts on the Eversource Hartford Marathon, which is a yearlong labor of love for our staff:

Andris:
Working my first marathon, the 2023 Eversource Hartford Marathon, is no doubt my personal highlight. I feel so much energy going into Hartford area programming and specifically fitness programming. I take pride being part of the team that brings this event to Hartford and it was incredible to see the enthusiasm of all those that take part, participants and spectators alike. I am vibing with the local fitness community and how they contribute to this event and the local fitness culture at large. Special local community shoutouts: 86GO and Red Rock Tavern, Traprock Run Club, Fleet Feet WeHa and everyone else I run with. 2024, let’s go even bigger!

Matt:
It’s hard not to recognize the Eversource Hartford Marathon & Half Marathon. Standing at the start line every year, you can’t help but feel the power of the day, the anticipation of the runners, and appreciate the size, scale and planning that went into making the event possible. It is truly a proud day, not just for the participants who reach their goals at the finish line, but for the entire state of Connecticut.

Nancy:
I just love how this event is such a force for good for the Hartford region. Volunteers from the full spectrum of community groups come out to support the event (Girl Scouts, high school groups, collegiate groups, corporations, civic organizations). It is a major source of fundraising for so many charity groups and they too run the gamut from small local, seedling groups to national organizations. A morning race in downtown Hartford delivers support to local businesses over the weekend. The participants, who range from elite marathoners to casual 5K walkers, each experience a happy, memorable day. In a world with constant sad, distressing news cycles, it is so meaningful to have a positive event for so many.

Josh Miller, Hartford Marathon Foundation (HMF Events)http://www.blogger.com/profile/09861531014308531617noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703346022345885083.post-28242039879952561172023-12-13T08:05:00.000-08:002023-12-14T07:39:04.841-08:002024 Race Schedule + NEW Challenges!

As we finish out another busy year, we look ahead to what new goals, favorite finish lines and unique new opportunities for races and event experiences we can bring to the community in 2024.

While we understand not everyone is quite ready to commit to race plans for next year, we do want to encourage and motivate to set your sights early, with added peace of mind provided by our deferral policy (for any reason up to 14 days before an event), and optional Refundable Registration available for purchase. The 30th running of the premier marathon event in Connecticut will take place on Saturday, October 14, 2023, providing 25 Official Charities an opportunity to rally participants, supporters and volunteers to raise funds and awareness.

Official Charities support community and philanthropic initiatives across the region, offering participants a built-in platform to bring deeper meaning and greater positive impact to their race. Companies and organizations also have a variety of opportunities to engage in the event and support charity. The unique HMF Community Partner Program provides event visibility and employee engagement benefits while also directing a donation to an Official Charity of choice.

2023 Eversource Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon Official Charities:
Achilles International-Connecticut Chapter
Alzheimer’s Association
American Cancer Society
American Red Cross
Arthritis Foundation
Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford
Chrysalis Center, Inc.
Connecticut Children’s Alliance
Connecticut Children’s Medical Center
Donate Life Connecticut
Elbowbumpkid Inc. & JDRF
For All Ages
Girls on the Run Greater Hartford
Healing Meals Community Project
Hospital for Special Care
Joe Andruzzi Foundation
Megan Schulman Memorial Foundation
Operation Paws on the Ground
Postpartum Support Intl, CT Chapter
Ron Foley Foundation
Salvation Army Greater Hartford Division
Susan G. Currently serving as vice president, Josh has a long history with HMF. Having volunteered with his dad at the marathon since his early years, Josh then served on the race operations team during events and eventually as an intern in college. He started working in a full time role more than a decade ago and hasn't looked back since - you're certain to know his familiar face from events through the years!

You'll be hearing from him over the next few months as we communicate detailed plans on each of the 2023 events. In the meantime, expect a focus on the race traditions you know and love, with the return of signature races, including:

Mystic Half Marathon & 10K - May 21

UConn Health Half Marathon, 10K & 5K - June 3

Surftown Half Marathon, 5K & Relay, presented by Westerly Hospital - September 10

Our flagship event will be celebrating its 30th running this year, the Eversource Hartford Marathon, Half Marathon, Team 26.2 Relay and Charity 5K on October 14.

In an effort to ramp back up to full speed for enthusiastic participants and inspire those who may have lost their running bug, we're excited to bring more options in challenges and series:

Lucky Challenge - O'fficially kick off the 2023 season with four festive St. Paddy's themed 5K races to run or walk in March. Slainte!

Bunch of 10Ks - Ramp up spring racing with a three-race 10K challenge in April, May and June. We won't be starting the year with the Resolution Run, we hope to keep you motivated to move in January through the Jack Frost Challenge.

At this time, the RiMaConn Relay remains a question for 2023, though registration historically doesn't open until April. A number of factors are involved in determining if the 3-state relay is viable in the coming year. As we weigh those factors and look to create new epic adventures to rally participants, we'll be certain to keep you updated. We will continue to assess what the community is looking for and how we can best honor traditions of Hartford Marathon Foundation events while bringing new opportunities to motivate.

We so appreciate all of your incredibly kind words and show of support for Beth Shluger, founder of HMF in 1994 and our fearless leader for nearly 30 years. We all wish her well as she enjoys her retirement after such dedicated years of service to our community.

Registration will be opening next week for many 2023 events. Secure your spot early for the best pricing deal and look for more information through race web site pages next week!

Josh Miller, Hartford Marathon Foundation (HMF Events)http://www.blogger.com/profile/09861531014308531617noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703346022345885083.post-84676899357476272822022-12-01T06:02:00.002-08:002022-12-01T10:29:21.540-08:00Message of Thanks from Beth Shluger for 29 years of memories
At the end of a rewarding career, I'm trying to find the right words. Trying to express gratitude for you - for friends, colleagues, supporters and volunteers who helped me - helped us, really, to build this community of runners with a purpose beyond running.

How far we have come, since the days of these infamous hours-before-race-start stories:

1994 – 2:00 am: My husband Ken and I painted 42 miles of streets with directional arrows, year one of the Hartford Marathon.

1995 – 3:00 am: I constructed a balloon arch in the garage of City Place and trailed it through Hartford to adorn the start line.

1996 – 3:30 am: Ken and I snuck into the dark, quiet hotel kitchen to "borrow" a dozen coffee urns and make coffee for 400 volunteers.

And it continued, for 29 years.

In 2022 – After just 3 hours of sleep, the Operations team of 12 rose at 2 am to start the day's work at the Eversource Hartford Marathon.

Thank you for the memories from all of those finish lines…the marriage proposals, the many moments of pure joy, of fathers with daughters, sons with mothers, friends supporting each other. I got to witness it all – the father carrying his disabled young son across the finish, thanking friends who raised funds through the race to purchase a wheelchair van. We witnessed our heroic medical team saving a life at the 2022 finish line.

So many people and so many moments, including one of the greatest privileges of my life: the 2013 Sandy Hook Run for the Families.

From the sweet voices of the children singing America the Beautiful, to our friend, an Irish tenor, delivering an emotional National Anthem, we strived to set the right tone - one of respect, and hope and remembrance. And so, we brought our ship's bell and rang it 26 times – once every 5 seconds – the solemn, poignant, beautiful sound enveloped the crowd of 15,000 in complete silence. Every 5 seconds, the bell reminded us of an angelic 6-year-old or caring, selfless educator. The sound and the significance struck us to the depths of our souls.

You all have touched me in ways I will forever cherish. My thank-yous, in no particular order, are as earnest and genuine as all of you have been.

Thank you to all the runners, who demonstrated over and over the power and compassion of the human spirit. Who unfailingly took their time to share stories of how they got to the finish line, literally and metaphorically. Thank you for loving what we created for you.

Thank you to the newbies, those first timers who took that first step with HMF. Through the power of inspiration, you got moving for your own health and encouraged me to create new opportunities to embrace more like you.

Thank you to the amazing people who rose in the dark of night to drive to a new place - perhaps 60, 70, 80 miles away - to join us in the labor of staging races. Through rain, cold and heat, nothing stopped those volunteers. You are part of the HMF family and honor us by making the HMF family part of yours.

Thank you to all those who said yes when I asked 30 years ago for help, especially Chris and Peter Andrews, for being "all in, in all ways, at all times". To Art and Judy Snyder, our first and most loyal volunteers. To Jill Hallet, for being the first HMF employee, who's still with us and celebrating her 25th year. To the rest of the team, Josh, Matt, Ellen, Nancy, Liz, Genevieve, Sarah, John and the dozen more past and present employees, whose passion and commitment to our work equaled my own. Thank you.

To David Polk and Aetna for first funding this dream. To those who followed their lead to keep HMF going and growing: United Technologies, ING, and especially the people of Eversource, the best partners I could ever imagine.

Thank you to my family – mom and dad, my brothers, my children David, Olivia, Jacque and Cam. And most of all, to Ken. For 29 years, he has risen with me at 3 or 4 am to load trucks, fill water jugs and set traffic cones for more than 400 races. HMF is as much his as it is mine.

And this is where I end. You have all moved me to the depths of my soul.

Thank you,
Beth

Josh Miller, Hartford Marathon Foundation (HMF Events)http://www.blogger.com/profile/09861531014308531617noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703346022345885083.post-2653455772889910362022-08-19T10:35:00.001-07:002022-08-19T10:39:46.852-07:00Introducing the 2022 Inspiration Team

2022 Inspiration Team of Eversource Hartford Marathon & Half Marathon Celebrates The Power and Resilience of Runners

Glastonbury, CT – August 19, 2022 - The Hartford Marathon Foundation (HMF) announced the honored participants chosen to represent the 2022 Inspiration Team at the Eversource Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon. Starting with 2022 events, the option for non-binary or "prefer not to say" are within what has traditionally been offered as male or female categories.

All participants will continue to be included and displayed within overall results. With the updated options, those selecting non-binary will also be viewable as a division with participants eligible for non-binary division awards. Those that select "prefer not to say" will be included in overall results but not eligible for division awards.

Runner up in the non-binary division in Sunday's Resolution Run 5K, Jess Reed of Southington shared their thoughts on the experience:

Jess Reed, right

I think it's awesome that HMF now has a non-binary gender option when registering for races. In the past - I've often felt that I've had to misgender myself when registering for a race, by only having male or female to choose from. For some people having to pick either male or female can cause dysphoria. I think it's wonderful that HMF is being inclusive and is encouraging diversity.

At Sunday's race, there were two non-binary people who raced and were division winners, and I hope that number will continue to grow as more people see that there is a non-binary division being offered.

We appreciate the feedback from our community to make this change happen and we welcome participants in the division in future events!

Josh Miller, Hartford Marathon Foundation (HMF Events)http://www.blogger.com/profile/09861531014308531617noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703346022345885083.post-40435539846275568382021-12-22T10:59:00.003-08:002021-12-22T11:19:36.320-08:00New refund protection option during registration

The realm of the unexpected has been taken to a whole new level these past two years. This does not come without some serious and labor-intensive behind-the-scenes logistics though, course measurement is precise down to inches – yes, every single inch counts. Moving a curb in the road 10 inches can affect the course (and actually has).

2021 Eversource Hartford Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K courses are all USA Track & Field Certified courses. Courses are not measured by GPS, tape measure, surveying equipment, car, or by walking with a measuring wheel. All certified road race courses are measured by a standard bicycle fitted with a calibrated mechanical counter on the front wheel. We hire a certified certifier (they really exist, we can’t make this stuff up!) who follows a 100-page manual of rules.

GPS Measurements
We often get asked by participants why their GPS readings are not the same as course length. Typically, the "short course prevention factor" throws off the measurement. All USATF certified courses are required to include a 1/10th of 1 percent (one-thousandth percent) extra cushion to make sure no one runs less than the stated distance. For a full marathon, that means 42.1925 extra meters or a little more than 135 feet. This is standard to every single certified course, so give yourself a little extra credit!

When you train with a GPS, you stop when you hit the mileage you need for that run - whether 12 miles or 20, your GPS indicates when you need to stop. When you run certified courses, especially courses with as many turns as the 2021 courses have, it is common for you to run further than 26.2 or 13.1. Zig-zagging through people and running wide on turns by even a little adds up to tenths of miles here and there. Typically, only the people in the very front of the race are able to run the certified distance as they can see the straightest lines to run without people ahead of them (and don't need to weave through anyone).

You’ll note the language on course certificates confirms that measurements are taken “along the shortest possible route within the road and path pavement”. Most people do not naturally run the tangents along roads, which is also how courses are measured longer on personal GPS devices.

Check the details on race pages: marathon // half marathon // 5K

Josh Miller, Hartford Marathon Foundation (HMF Events)http://www.blogger.com/profile/09861531014308531617noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2703346022345885083.post-22941347208117046472021-09-07T12:37:00.000-07:002021-09-07T12:37:25.398-07:00Inspiration Team highlights community activists for positive change
Always a cherished tradition of the Eversource Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon, the Inspiration Team helps us tell amazing stories of some of the incredible people that run or volunteer with us each year. The weather is looking great this Saturday for teams to take on the 95-mile RiMaConn Relay, presented by Webster Bank. The relay for teams of three or six members will start in Lincoln, Rhode Island, run through Massachusetts and then into Connecticut to finish in Hartford. The whole relay has 18 legs, with a special WilliHart Relay consisting of the last 6 legs for two
groups of youth runners. The two teams made up of current and former high school students from Manchester and Hartford will be hitting the course from Willimantic to Hartford.

Meet the runners from Hartford Public High School:
Philip Mitchell is the cross country and track & field coach at Hartford Public High School (HPHS). When HMF race director Josh Miller reached out about a team, Mitchell knew it was an opportunity for his runners to compete together before the school year began.

Unfortunately, the pandemic has discouraged new students from joining the HPHS team and his roster has thinned. Not to let this opportunity pass, Mitchell knew he had created a special bond with some of his recent graduates and thought the relay would be a great experience for them.

“As a coach, one of my goals is to help foster a lifelong love of the sport and this is an indicator that I am reaching that goal,” said Philip Mitchell.

Current Hartford Public High School student Hawaye Adams will be running the nearly 35-mile stretch from Willimantic to Hartford together with five recent graduates.

The team of six will be each running a leg of the race. A 95 mile relay seems like a great way to take a break, right? Two members of the team participated in 2019 and rallied a group for their second time running RiMaConn Relay, presented by Webster Bank. The members of the team are Amanda St. George, Rachel Foskett, Michele Loughlin, Danielle Thornbrugh, Sadie Vivenzio and Amanda White, learn a little more about what motivates them:

What inspires your team to complete this epic adventure? We just really want a fun day away. Running is the only time we get peace and quiet. What better excuse do you need to get away from the kids and husbands? Between the 6 of us we have 12 kids - 7 boys and 5 girls - ranging in age from 12 to 4. All of our kids play soccer, and a few of us have kids in other sports basketball, baseball, cheerleading, horseback riding, football, rock climbing, gymnastics. And probably more, it doesn't end.

What do you want other teams to know about you? We are A LOT of fun, but we are REALLY slow!

What are you most excited about for race day? Most nervous about? We are super excited to explore the course, make new memories and create new inside jokes with the girls. We are most nervous about those hills!

How did the team come together?
Two moms on the team ran at the first RiMaConn and loved it. Then we just asked other moms around town at our kids’ sporting events. Eventually we found 6 people crazy enough to do it!

What the inspiration for the team name "Real Housewives of Worcester County"? Four of us live in the same neighborhood...and we live in a hood that is just like those shows! Triathlon and the Women's Triathlon,
we are so ready to get back to it this summer!
As with all of our 2021 race planning efforts, a ton of attention to
detail is being paid to public safety.
Triathlons are innately complex events with a balance of timing, traffic
flows and lots of measures to make them smooth and safe for participants,
volunteers and spectators in a typical year.
This year, expect the return of those efforts with the added level of
COVID-19 mitigation strategies to spread out participants and reduce contact
points.

Those necessary efforts will force us to reduce capacity,
which directly impacts the budget to produce both of the triathlon events. This doesn't mean services will be skimped on
or swag will disappear, we remain committed to provide the high quality
experience you have come to expect from HMF.
It will, however, prevent us from providing any group or specialty
discounts or extending deep discounted registration-opening prices. Late
registration will come at a premium so register early to secure your spot in
the limited field.

We are hopeful as the weeks and months move on, a sense of
normalcy will settle back in and that race planning can again inspire big goals
to achieve. Quiet weekends at home give way to squeezing in days of double training
time around work travel obligations or the packed schedules of busy families once
again. The way it should be.

We learned some really interesting tidbits about participants in the Jack Frost Challenge last month that keep us inspired!

For TJ McKenna, a Boston University professor who logged the highest activity in the Challenge (481 miles!), a goal to do at least 10 miles for every hour spent in a Zoom meeting was just the beginning. He and his wife both participated in the Jack Frost Challenge and they run in honor of Lindsay, his sister-in-law, as part of Team Be Happy and the Lindsay's Legacy Foundation. Last year, they donated and shipped more than 600 face shields to those most in need and raised $10,000 for the Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New Haven Health. The Challenge gave him a reason to tackle multiple long sets everyday and keep up training for triathlons.

Celeste Fong, who followed closely with an impressive 477 miles, wanted to start the year by pushing herself far outside her comfort zone. She appreciated a January challenge like this to motivate people to turn a goal into a habit.

"I’ve seen the sunrise almost every single day. I’ve spent tons of miles walking and hiking with my mom. I’ve also explored a bunch of new trails. It’s been a fabulous month in so many ways."
While TJ and Celeste racked up impressive mileage, the volume of people committed to their goal was remarkably inspiring:

Of 1,012 in the challenge, an average of 820 participants submitted each of the 21 days

17,230 total activities were submitted

58,812 miles of activity were logged by the community

3.41 miles per submission was the average

Jose Lugo committed to a 10K a day and early on had to strategize his time to run or walk 6.2 miles with warm-ups and cool downs around his full-time work schedule. He also paid more attention to the daily weather forecast than ever before! A frequent HMF race participant, Jose misses the competition and appreciated being able to follow the leaderboard to get in the spirit of it more, compelling him to log more January miles than he ever has.

"The pandemic made me realize that I'm not meant to be indoors for a long period of time. The Challenge gave me goals and the fact that I surpassed my goals this early in the year gives me a great sense of satisfaction."
For John Bornhorst, a friendly face at HMF finish lines in a normal year, the Challenge forced him to get out and complete a 5K a day. The option for indoor or outdoor activities was an initial draw, but the added challenge of managing the winter weather kept him outside to log his miles. He also encouraged a colleague and newer runner to use running and aerobics to successfully keep moving in January.

Congratulations to all Jack Frost Challenge participants and to the 21 winners of Daily Prizes from Fleet Feet West Hartford! Thankfully, there was also quite a bit of good stuff to be proud of - thank you for making it all happen...

Hartford Marathon Foundation Inspires Community Giving,
Fosters $513,000 in Participant Donations in 2020
With road races halted for the pandemic, non-profit creates new ways to encourage runners

The Hartford Marathon Foundation (HMF) pivoted its 2020 calendar of road race events to create virtual races, challenges and engagement programs for runners and walkers to keep active for physical and mental health benefits. In the process, the non-profit race management company fostered $513,122 in donations from participants to support local causes. Additionally, HMF collected almost 2,000 pounds of non-perishable food donations to benefit community partners, including FoodShare, Amazing Grace Food Pantry in Middletown and the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Bank.

As the Foundation releases its 2021 race calendar and opens registration for its signature annual event, the Eversource Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon, operations staff is assessing all aspects and scenarios to address event safety. Currently, a short-term refund policy is in effect to provide customers assurance of their registration investment while the logistics and safety procedures for the October 2021 event are thoroughly detailed. Attention continues to be paid to community support initiatives that can be tied to 2021 virtual events, challenges, hybrid races and in-person events.

"The generosity, strength and resilience of the local running community inspires us to continue pushing through the arduous tasks of event planning through the pandemic. We're working hard to provide events and programs that encourage people to set and reach different types of goals as we all wait with anticipation for a return to the grand finish line experiences we have proudly delivered for the past 27 years," said Beth Shluger, founder and CEO of the Hartford Marathon Foundation. "We are so appreciative of the participants and the generous sponsor partners that enable us to maintain our dedicated, professional staff and keep our non-profit operations solvent so the community can count on us when we all get to the other side of this."

The single largest HMF charity fundraising initiative in 2020 was the Eversource Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon. The virtual "Movement with Purpose" brought the community together to raise $420,712 for local charities with the support of Eversource and event sponsors. In addition, targeted community driven efforts included:

• $33,200 raised through the June 2020 UConn Health Half Marathon, 10K and 5K to benefit the UConn Health COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund

• $18,197 generated through the virtual Johnson Brunetti 5K & OneDigital UnitedHealthcare Kids Fun Run for Hartford's Camp Courant

• $7,000 provided to FoodShare in partnership with Stop & Shop for the March 2020 Lucky Run and $5,768 provided to FoodShare through the 12Ks of Christmas challeng

• $4,283 raised for the Westerly Hospital Foundation through the Surftown 100 Challenge in September 2020

• $2,960 and food donations for the Gemma E.
